It's about surrender. Just letting yourself be taken over by the wash of good feeling that falling in love can bring. As I grew up on the beach in Newcastle NSW, I can remember many times diving into the ocean, being swept up in the current and tumbled around like I was in a washer, only to suddenly stand up again facing the opposite direction, totally bewildered by the dizzy feelings in my head. Falling in love can be a bit like that sometimes. All that foam and the thunder of the waves, the exhilaration as you are lifted above the world before the wave crashes further in, or the spray coming back off the wave when the wind is off shore. I love the beach, and this song tries to marry the good and the dangerous about the beach with those same things that happen is a relationship. In many ways it's a song of faith, a hymn if you like. The first verse references a film with Nicholas Cage in it where a dog is chained up outside his house. When I saw the film I really identified the dog as a metaphore for some of the characters in the film. The film is about abuse and culminates in some horrific scenes where in the end the innocents in the film win through. This Song is also about PTSD, how it is a prison and how fear can paralyse the victim. The singer is calling out to the victim wishing he could free them from the problem. Its a song that is about remorse, memories and hopes unattained. The lyric centres around the idea of a repetition of the first line of each verse. Its a bit like stuttering or slowley coming out with the full story. The truth is hard to reveal so the singer takes a couple of goes at saying what he really means. It starts as a third person type thing and then in the bridge the singer lets you know his perspective of being the new partner. I also like the way the choruses change perspective a little as they go on a second and third time. The song was inspired by domestic violence issues around me at the time. As I grew up in a sometimes violent home and saw some of my friends settling for violent relationships, I wrote this song to help people make a decision to get out. Its a song to those people who think they can't move on. A cheering from the sidelines. It was inspired by seeing a couple of friends of mine obviousley in love and how it was imposible to hide it even to me as a casual observer. It got me thinking about how we hide emotions away untill we can't stand the pressure anymore. Then sometimes either blurted out uncermoniously, or over a candle lit dinner or the back seat of a taxi home it bubbles up in all sorts of ways. The wait for the reaction, the hope of acceptance, all these things are of a secondary nature at that moment because its all about release of the truth, all pretense abandoned. First I was driving to Adelaide to do the beds. As I drove I was thinking about leaving Australia and moving to Nashville in a few months time. There were many exits on the freeway and the song title came to me in one of those solitude moments that happen so often on long drives. So as I drove down that hill to Adelaide all I had was a title. After a day or so I had coffee in Glenelg with an old friend Le Roy, as I drove a melody percolated up into my head no lyrics just this little melody. I went back to the studio and sat down at that 10 ft grand and worked out the chords, it was Exit Wounds, but I still had no idea what the song was about. After the recording and saying goodbye to all those people I knew in Adelaide, I drove to Melbourne, an 8 hour drive. I had a few people to see. One was a freind overcoming cancer, another was a composer just starting out. As I drove back to Sydney with the weight of leaving and all those emotions from all the people I'd said goodbye to on the trip, I felt I had lost something very dear to me. So the lyrics slowley came on the drive home and consolidated over the next few weeks.
